What Is a Bug Out Bag or Go Bag and Why Do I Need Them

I’m sure you’ve heard the term go bag, bug out bag, grab and go bag or emergency bag before. If you don’t already have some of them, then you are probably are not sure exactly what they are nor why you would need one.

Most of these bags are backpacks. Some are black and nondescript and some are red with emergency reflector tape all over them. They come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes. There are lots of different price points and lots of different types of go bags.  In fact, there is a different type of go bag for just about any need you can think of.

These bags typically contain dozens up to hundreds of different types of survival type items. They can contain everything from first aid kits, emergency survival food, weapons, emergency radios and walkie-talkies, par shoot cord, fire starting devices, solar blankets and tents, toilet paper and personal hygiene items, water and water purifiers, fishing equipment, knives, and on and on it goes.

There are urban survival go bags, female go bags, camping go bags, EMP go bags, first aid go bags, family go bags, individual go bags, pet go bags, and much more.

So the next question most people often ask is why would I ever need one. They are all centered on emergencies. By definition, emergencies are not planned. They are unexpected. When the unexpected happens, we are often stressed out, scared and certainly not thinking clearly. How often have you ever heard people on the news who said they had to leave their home our office or car immediately?

So that’s why go bags were created. They are the one thing that you have on hand for unexpected situations. It’s a smart idea to keep a go bag in your car, keep one in your office and some at your home.  That way you can always have one near you. It doesn’t do you any good to have the best go bags in the world at home, if you don’t have them with you when you need them.

Many people often customize their go bags with personal items that they deem important like; cash, gold and silver coins, guns and ammo, passports, important papers and documents, maps, extra cell phones and batteries and a written emergency plan. It is highly recommended that every member of your family have a copy of your families pre-determined emergency plan.

This plan outlines exactly what every member of the family should do in the event of an emergency. It contains a meeting place if you are away from home. It has emergency phone numbers, addresses, hiding places where you have stashed some valuables and a plan B, C, D, E, F, etc.

Having some go bags is just a smart thing to do. We all hope we never need them but if we do, we will look like a genius and  it could very well save our lives one day. They really don’t cost that much money and once you have them, you are good. You can check it off your list and begin to sleep much more soundly knowing you are prepared in advance if the need arises.
